Staffing

The Hunters Point Family is managed by a dynamic two-person Executive Team:  Executive Director of Programs, Takai Tyler, and Executive Director of Development, Lena Miller.  The Executive Team has joint authority and equal power within the agency, with each Director having specific responsibilities and sphere of influence.  The Executive Director of Programs is responsible for managing and supervising all agency staff as well as implementing and overseeing all existing programs.  The Executive Director of Development develops new programs, identifies funding sources, and oversees the creation of collateral including the agency’s annual report and biannual newsletter.

The Hunters Point Family’s Board of Directors oversees agency policies and their implementation.  Three quarters (75%) of the current board members grew up in the Hunters Point neighborhood.

Lena Miller

Lena Miller, the Agency’s founder and current Executive Director of Development, is a life-long resident of the Bayview Hunters Point district of San Francisco and has over fourteen years of experience working with at-risk youth in group homes, schools, and camps.  She has worked for Hunters Point Family since its inception in 1997.  A graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, she holds a Masters Degree in Social Work from San Francisco State University.  Prior to her work at HPF, she was employed in San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown’s office where she helped to resolve discrimination complaints among City employees and minority contracting.   Lena is a fellow of the Leaderspring program and was appointed to the Urban Forestry Commission in 2005.

Takai Tyler

Executive Director, Takai Tyler, is a former resident of public housing in Wyoming and has over 20 years of experience working with similar populations in foster care agencies.  She holds a Bachelors Degree from McCalister College, where she majored in sociology, and a Masters in Social Work from San Francisco State University.  Prior to joining the Hunters Point Family, she was Program Director for the Marin Abused Women’s Services, and was the Intake Coordinator/Assistant Program Director at Alternative Family Services.  She began her career at HPF in 1998 as a Case Manager at GIRLS 2000 and was promoted to Program Director four months later.  In 2004, she became a member of the agency’s Executive Team as Executive Director of Programs.

For the Community, By the Community

HPF recognizes that the key to providing high-quality services lies in hiring qualified staff who have the appropriate education and experience to implement the program, and who share the vision and ethics of the agency to provide the services with care and compassion.  The agency values education, experience, and above all, cultural competency.  These qualities are reflected in the administration and staff of the agency.  Currently, 96% of agency staff are current or former residents of BVHP; thus, they are culturally competent as they share the community and culture of the participants.

Organizational Structure

The HPF agency is led by a Board of Directors that meets monthly with the Executive Team and to ensure effective implementation of program policies, strategies, and services. The Board of Directors is comprised of a diverse range of professionals and community members who have expertise in fiscal management, human resources, law, and fundraising.

The agency’s administration consists of a two person Executive Team: The Executive Director of Programs, Takai Tyler, and the Executive Director of Development, Lena Miller.  The Executive Director of Programs is responsible for the overall implementation of all programmatic activities, supervises and provides support to staff, and ensures staff receive training and education for all youth development programs. The Executive Director of Development is responsible for fundraising, program design and development, marketing and communications, and supervising staff of HPF’s Employment and Entrepreneurial programs.

Staff Training & Development

All HPF staff participate in bi-weekly trainings regarding youth development, managing grief, delinquency prevention strategies, implementing quality programming for teens, violence prevention and intervention, team building, and leadership development. The Executive Team also provides individual supervision with Program Directors on a weekly basis in order to provide support and supervision.
