EDUCATION

The Hunters Point Family provides comprehensive educational services including advocacy and support within the school district, tutoring, computer classes, access to computers and the Internet, and assistance with applying and preparing for college.

HPF staff maintain contact with participants’ teachers and counselors, to provide academic and social support and track participants’ academic achievement through weekly progress reports that indicate test results, performance on homework assignments, and attendance for each class.

If a participant’s academic performance or attendance is deteriorating, staff will intervene with his/her parents and the appropriate school officials. Youth are encouraged to use academic tutoring that is provided at program sites, Monday through Friday, 2:00-5:00 pm, where they can use internet-ready computers to complete home work assignments and projects.

HPF also maintains a partnership with the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights so youth have access to legal representation if s/he is expelled or placed in a school that is inappropriate for his/her social and educational needs.

Case Managers will assist participants who have graduated from high school to identify and enroll in colleges, universities, and training programs that are consistent with their career goals.  Staff provide one-on-one assistance to youth researching schools, completing applications, and applying for financial aid.  Once the youth enrolls in school/training programs, staff  assist participants to manage their time and finances so they will graduate.
