A Community Family for Our Youth

URBAN FARMS / FARMERS MARKET

The Hunters Point Family program participants are given an extraordinary training and employment opportunity through their experiences in the agency’s two urban organic farms – the only ones in California.

In these oases, youth learn:

  • The benefits of organic gardening over conventional methods
  • Composting techniques
  • Recycling processes
  • The positive effect of trees on the atmosphere
  • Promotion of healthy eating in the community
  • Sense of responsibility running the Farmers Market booths
  • Community stewardship through educating and feeding the community with living, organic produce
  • Connectedness with the earth, the rhythms of the seasons, and growth cycles of plants

Participants grow organic produce and distribute it to families in the community, every Thursday, at HPF’s community food pantry. They also sell the organic produce they grow at a local Farmers Market.

The youth perform community service by going door to door throughout the Bayview Hunters Point community to inform residents about both the Farmers Market and the healthful benefits of eating fresh, organic produce as opposed to processed foods and conventional foods that have been grown with pesticides.
