EDUCATION

The Hunters Point Family provides comprehensive educational services including advocacy and support within the school district, tutoring, computer classes, access to computers and the Internet, and assistance with applying and preparing for college.

HPF staff maintain contact with participants’ teachers and counselors, to provide academic and social support and track participants’ academic achievement through weekly progress reports that indicate test results, performance on homework assignments, and attendance for each class.

If a participant’s academic performance or attendance is deteriorating, staff will intervene with his/her parents and the appropriate school officials. Youth are encouraged to use academic tutoring that is provided at program sites, Monday through Friday, 2:00-5:00 pm, where they can use internet-ready computers to complete home work assignments and projects.

HPF also maintains a partnership with the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights so youth have access to legal representation if s/he is expelled or placed in a school that is inappropriate for his/her social and educational needs.

Case Managers will assist participants who have graduated from high school to identify and enroll in colleges, universities, and training programs that are consistent with their career goals.  Staff provide one-on-one assistance to youth researching schools, completing applications, and applying for financial aid.  Once the youth enrolls in school/training programs, staff  assist participants to manage their time and finances so they will graduate.

GILMAN REC-CONNECT

Gilman Rec-Connect, the Hunters Point Family’s newest program, is part of a city-wide initiative of the Department of Children, Youth, and Families, to leverage the synergy and resources of community based organizations to create dynamic community centers throughout the city. The goal of the Gilman Rec-Connect program is to revitalize the recreational activities offered and create new programming for over 200 youth and their families each year, for youth and their families living in the Bayview Hunters Point neighborhood.

The governance of the project has been designed to be a Youth/Adult partnership that empowers adolescent community residents to assume responsibility for community development.  Consistent with the Hunters Point Family’s philosophy and practices, all services are delivered within the framework of youth development principles. Gilman Rec-Connect is a unique youth led program that promotes youth leadership, education, recreation, and offers programming that encourages youth and family engagement within a safe and inviting environment.  Gilman Rec-Connect’s decision making structure reflects our vision to create a youth-led program that is supported by adult co-leads from the Hunters Point Family.  All decisions related to programming, activities, and events are made by the Youth Steering Team.  The Program Director assists youth to come to a consensus and make responsible decisions by helping them to weigh various relevant factors, playing out possible scenarios, and playing devils advocate.

Gilman Rec-Connect partners with various other programs and organizations to offer a variety of activities for participants with various interests and skill levels, including: Streetside Stories, Tree Frog Treks, Music in Schools Today, Boy Scouts of America, Acrosports,  Lacross for Life, Kipp Bay Academy, Girls 2000, Alice Griffith Community Garden.

Gilman playground operates in the fall and winter from 10am to 7pm[j1] Monday – Friday, and occasional Saturdays. During the spring and summer the hours of operation are 9am to 8pm Monday – Friday and occasionally on Saturdays.  The following activities are offered at the program: Basketball, Tree Frog Treks, Sports, Space for Daycare Providers’ Play Area Drumming, Cooking Class, Weight Training, Yoga, Streetside Stories, Community Advisory Group Meetings, Movie Nights, Arts & Crafts, Dance Class, Gender-Specific Groups, Outings, Barbecue/Picnic, Games, and Community Meetings

Gilman Rec-Connect staff solicit on-going feedback from youth and conduct an annual community assessment to ensure that its programs remain true to the original vision while remaining responsive to changing community needs

URBAN FARMS / FARMERS MARKET

The Hunters Point Family program participants are given an extraordinary training and employment opportunity through their experiences in the agency’s two urban organic farms – the only ones in California.

In these oases, youth learn:

  • The benefits of organic gardening over conventional methods
  • Composting techniques
  • Recycling processes
  • The positive effect of trees on the atmosphere
  • Promotion of healthy eating in the community
  • Sense of responsibility running the Farmers Market booths
  • Community stewardship through educating and feeding the community with living, organic produce
  • Connectedness with the earth, the rhythms of the seasons, and growth cycles of plants

Participants grow organic produce and distribute it to families in the community, every Thursday, at HPF’s community food pantry. They also sell the organic produce they grow at a local Farmers Market.

The youth perform community service by going door to door throughout the Bayview Hunters Point community to inform residents about both the Farmers Market and the healthful benefits of eating fresh, organic produce as opposed to processed foods and conventional foods that have been grown with pesticides.

Four Cornerstones

Every Hunters Point Family program is built on four healthy and productive cornerstones designed to foster the strengths of young people and develop their full potential.  Together, these cornerstones provide youth with the ability to transcend obstacles, identify opportunities, apply and develop their innate skills and talents, and create a balanced and fulfilling lifestyle.

    HEALTHY LIFESTYLES

Many residents of Hunters Point do not have access to basic nutrition.  Children suffer both mentally and physically from eating too much junk food and skipping meals.

    Healthy Lifestyles provides youth with:

    • Nutrition education and workshops
    • Access to distribution of healthy foods through HPF’s food pantry
    • Cooking classes
    • Employment and training in urban farming, landscaping, and the
sale of organic produce through HPF’s urban farm and farmers
      market

    EVERYTHING ARTS!

Hunters Point Family has found that many participants who aren’t motivated by traditional classwork respond strongly to education through the arts.  For a sample of such a success, read the Bread Me Out Family story.

    The Everything Arts! approach includes

    • Dance classes and performances
    • Music composition, production, and recording
    • Mural classes and projects
    • Journalism classes
    • Film development and production

In addition to expanding the minds of the youth, these offerings provide a venue for young people in which to express their emotions in a positive way. They have created beautiful mural projects and music CDs that have sold thousands of units throughout the Bay Area. Funding was recently received from the San Francisco Arts Commission for HPF youth to create a “talking mural” that will be featured along the Third Street Light Rail project. HPF’s artistic projects have won awards at the Sundance Film Festival and the Museum of Modern Art.

    EDUCATION The KEYS: Kujichaqulia

Educational support for Hunters Point Family program participants is based on The KEYS: Kujichaqulia Educational Youth Services. Kujichaqulia is the Kwanzaa principle of self-determination.

    This strategy includes:

    • Educational guidance, support, and tracking
    • Tutoring
    • Advocacy and support within the schools
    • Test preparation
    • Life skills workshops
    • Employment readiness and placement services

In most cases, thorough and successful completion of homework is rewarded with a Friday night outing such as pizza night or a trip to the movies.
