HPF uses enrichment services as a central strategy to empower youth to achieve their potential, encourage creativity, skill building, and facilitate positive peer interaction. HPF programs offer daily classes, skill-building workshops, and enrichment activities. Workshops provide discussion and practical tools on strategies for living productively, while focusing on team building and are designed to support youth exploration of personal values and goals as they relate to transformation from destructive behavior to empowerment and self-esteem.
- The Hunters Point Family has developed strategic partnerships with artists and arts based organizations to sustain our arts programs. Professional artists and accomplished HPF alumni who have demonstrated mastery in the arts, teach classes in the fields of film, music production, web design, and muraling. These hands on, project based workshops are facilitated at least twice a week. Each workshop consists of a youth cohort of 5-10 youth who will become proficient in their chosen art. Each cohort’s final projects are displayed on the web (on HPF’s website, youth’s individual websites, YouTube, and other appropriate locations), on television, on sites that feature digital downloading, in open houses, in private and public screenings, or permanent display (as in the case of murals). Youth who have successfully completed the workshop series and final project and have gained sufficient skills may continue working on projects with individual artists and arts organizations or teach their particular skill to other HPF participants.
- Every Friday program participants attend a recreational outing that compliments their educational activities throughout the week. Youth experience fun and culture at local venues, such as restaurants, museums, plays, the movies, and other events.
- Major outings take place one Saturday per month. Outings are designed to expose participants to unique and enlightening experiences to enhance their quality of life. Past trips included a weeklong backpacking trip in Yosemite, a weekend snow trip to Lake Tahoe, Magic Mountain, a black college tour in Atlanta, New Orleans, and Venice Beach.
- Every summer, female participants, from each HPF program, attend a three day, two night retreat to Mountain Mill house Outdoor Center, in Calistoga (CA), where they participate in intensive team building exercises, a challenge ropes course where they will build self-esteem and develop leadership skills, and a series of workshops on non-violent conflict resolution, where young women will learn strategies to transform potentially explosive situations into positive learning experiences that develop personal strength and empowerment.
- At least once a month, youth attend workshops and conferences that promote leadership, community service and explore various issues that are specific to the health development of African American youth.
Enrichment activities include film, cooking, and dance classes, and recreational outings that are structured to provide youth with activities that require teamwork and cooperation (i.e. bowling teams, ropes courses, group sports, arts/music projects etc.). Outings provide youth opportunities to interact positively with youth within the broader BVHP community.
